A TOUR WHICH TAKES DAVID, THE PRISONERS AND THE OTHER STATUES BY MICHELANGELO OUT OF THE ACCADEMIA AND PUTS THEM BACK INTO THEIR CONTEXT, AND WHICH HELPS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEY HAVE BEEN UNDERSTOOD THROUGH THE AGES.
By all means just look at David, and look again, and again; but there are so many other layers which just keep on adding to our understanding and enjoyment of the statue. He’s not just David from the Bible, neither is he just a statue of a Greek god; he wasn’t originally made for the Accademia or for the square where he stood for 400 odd years; the block of marble he is made from was brought to Florence long before Michelangelo’s birth and had been worked on before Michelangelo was even thought of; he’s been damaged and moved from place to place, stones have been hurled at him, objects dropped on him, children have climbed on him; he’s been interpreted and reinterpreted. Nonetheless, he changed European art, and maybe European art revolves around him…
The unfinshed statues which stand before David are also fascinating all by themselves, but they also illustrate Michelangelo’s creative processes and how they changed after he made the David, giving us something like a portrait of Michelangelo through time.
